BACKGROUND

Emily Russell is a Nashville-based audio engineer and immersive audio specialist with deep expertise in both stereo and Dolby Atmos production. With nearly a decade of hands-on experience and a Master of Science in Audio Engineering from Belmont University, she blends creative intuition with technical precision to craft emotionally resonant soundscapes across genres.

Her career includes work at Grammy Award–winning studios in New York and Nashville, contributing to projects for globally recognized artists such as The Goo Goo Dolls, Carrie Underwood, Weezer, Lauren Daigle, and The Band JOSEPH.

In addition to her studio work, Emily played a key role in development and execution of  Sollos Sound Therapy, a sonic wellness initiative from Universal Music Group in partnership with Apple Music. Blending perceptual audio science with UMG’s global music catalog, Sollos promotes focus, relaxation, and sleep—representing an innovative step forward at the intersection of music and neuroscience. Sollos Sound Therapy is now streaming on Apple Music.

As Owner and Chief Engineer of Crooked Letter Eye Productions, Emily provides stereo and Dolby Atmos mixing, mastering, and technical consulting to artists and studios pushing the boundaries of sound. She has trained Grammy-winning engineers in immersive workflows and consulted on the design and optimization of next-generation Dolby Atmos rooms for commercial use.

A passionate advocate for equity in audio, Emily is an active member of the Audio Engineering Society, Women’s Audio Mission, She Is The Music, and—most importantly—a George Michael fan page on Facebook.

    With nearly a decade of experience in the music industry and academic research in audio technologies, I aim to enhance the artist’s intent. For me, stereo mixing is about crafting depth, color, and energy that resonate with listeners and bring the music to life.

Stereo mastering is the final stage of audio production where I refine and optimize a stereo mix to ensure it sounds its absolute best across all playback systems. Drawing on my academic research, industry experience, and meticulous attention to detail, I focus on enhancing clarity, balance, and emotional impact while preserving the artist's creative vision. For me, stereo mastering is about creating a seamless listening experience that connects deeply with audiences.

For me, Dolby Atmos mixing is about pushing boundaries, enhancing the emotional connection between music and its audience, and redefining how we experience sound.

This process involves fine-tuning spatial dynamics, optimizing balance and tonal consistency, and ensuring the mix adheres to Dolby’s standards while preserving the emotional impact of the music.

    Mastering for Dolby Atmos, the focus of my academic research, is something I’ve long advocated for people to prioritize and understand. With extensive experience in both stereo and Dolby Atmos mastering, I’ve dedicated myself to bridging proven techniques from traditional mastering with the possibilities of this cutting-edge technology.

    For me, Dolby Atmos mastering isn’t just about compliance or quality assurance, it’s about enhancing the listener's journey and ensuring the artist’s vision resonates in its most expansive and impactful form.
